Invitations have been sent for the in-person event at Apple Park in California, USA. The event, themed “It’s Glowtime,” features a glowing Apple logo and is expected to introduce several new products, including the iPhone 16 series, the Apple Watch Series 10, and the fourth-generation AirPods.

The iPhone 16 series is anticipated to feature a customizable Action Button and a new Capture Button. The lineup will be powered by the new A18 chip, which supports advanced Apple Intelligence features. The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to include a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 5x telephoto lens. The Apple Watch Series 10 is rumored to have a thinner design and a new magnetic mechanism for its bands. In addition to the Series 10, new models of the Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Ultra are expected. Tecno Unveils Phantom Ultimate 2: A Tri-Fold Smartphone Concept with 10-Inch Display

Tecno has introduced the Phantom Ultimate 2, a tri-fold smartphone concept, at the IFA Berlin. The device is a successor to the Tecno Phantom Ultimate, which was a rollable smartphone concept revealed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024. The Phantom Ultimate 2 boasts a triple foldable screen with a dual-hinge mechanism, allowing the phone to expand from a compact candy bar form factor to a large 10-inch display with minimal creases.

The concept device features a 6.48-inch cover display and a 10-inch LTPO OLED inner screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. It is the first foldable phone to use touch and display driver integration (TDDI) technology, which integrates the display driver and touch sensor into a single chip. Despite its complex folding mechanism, the Phantom Ultimate 2 maintains a slim profile of 11mm when folded, making it thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.

The device also includes a dual-hinge mechanism that has been tested for durability, capable of withstanding 300,000 folds and unfolds. It is equipped with an ultra-slim battery, measuring just 0.25mm in thickness.

Tecno has not confirmed if or when the Phantom Ultimate 2 will be released commercially, as concept devices are often showcased to demonstrate a company’s technological capabilities. Meanwhile, Huawei is rumored to be planning to launch its own tri-fold smartphone in October, potentially becoming the first company to bring such a device to market.

Tecno has not disclosed pricing details or a release date for the Phantom Ultimate 2. The device is currently a concept model with no confirmed plans for commercial availability.

OnePlus Users Facing Severe Bricking Issues with Older Flagship Models

OnePlus smartphone users have reported a critical issue affecting older flagship models, such as the OnePlus 10 Pro and OnePlus 9 Pro. Many users have experienced their phones suddenly becoming unusable, with screens going black and the devices showing no power, a problem attributed to dead motherboards. Complaints about these issues have surged on the company’s community pages and social media platforms.

Affected users have shared that their phones became unresponsive after a software update or experienced severe lag and overheating. Attempts to hard reset or use troubleshooting methods proved ineffective. The situation worsened when users contacted service centers for solutions; they were quoted as much as Rs 42,000 for repairs, often exceeding the value of the devices themselves.

In response to the growing concerns, OnePlus issued a statement acknowledging the issue. They expressed regret over the problems reported with the OnePlus 9 and 10 Pro models and assured users that they are investigating the cause and are committed to improving customer experience. While motherboard repairs can be costly, OnePlus is working to make them more affordable. The company urged affected customers to contact their Customer Service for assistance.

This bricking issue follows previous hardware problems reported in earlier OnePlus models, such as the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 6, highlighting a recurring challenge for the brand. Users are now demanding replacements or free repairs and a swift response from OnePlus to address the ongoing concerns.

Neuralink, the brain-computer interface (BCI) company founded by Elon Musk, recently provided an update on the progress of its second human trial participant, Alex, who became quadriplegic after a spinal cord injury. The PRIME study, which began earlier this year, aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Neuralink’s BCI devices, along with the associated software, surgical robots, tools, and procedures needed for successful implant delivery.

Before his accident, Alex was an automotive technician and a fan of first-person shooter (FPS) games. After the accident, he relied on a specialized controller for quadriplegics called the Quadstick to play games like Counter-Strike 2. This mouth-operated joystick features pressure and lip position sensors for clicking but restricts users to either moving or aiming at any given time. The controller has its limitations, as users can only aim their weapon or move, but not both simultaneously, unlike able-bodied players. Simply put, Alex had to switch back and forth between mouse and keyboard functions while playing.

quadstick
image : quadstick

After receiving the Neuralink implant, Alex demonstrated significant improvements in his ability to interact with the game. By combining the Quadstick with the BCI, Alex can now move, aim, and shoot simultaneously, purely through thought. His implant interprets his brain signals to provide the appropriate in-game inputs, allowing him to perform actions that were previously impossible with his condition. On his first day using the device, Alex broke existing BCI world records, showcasing the implant’s capabilities.

Beyond gaming, Alex has utilized the implant to engage in computer-aided design (CAD), a task previously challenging due to the limitations of the Quadstick. On just his second day with the Neuralink device, he successfully used CAD software, Fusion 360, to design a custom mount for his Neuralink charger. This mount was then 3D printed and integrated into his setup.

The Hangzhou-based developer announced this milestone on August 23 via the game’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter). The game was released on August 20 across multiple platforms, including Steam, PlayStation, and Tencent’s WeGame.

Within the first 24 hours of its release, Black Myth: Wukong sold 4.5 million copies, outperforming the initial sales of other major titles like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077. The game’s rapid success has positioned it among the fastest-selling games in history. It offers an action RPG experience with a blend of intense combat, magical spells, transformations, and staff techniques. Additionally, the game provides a deep storyline that explores the backgrounds and motivations of its characters, enhancing the narrative experience for players.

Xiaomi Preparing New In-House 5G Chipset and Advanced Foldable Smartphone

Xiaomi in house 5g chipset

Xiaomi, a leading brand in global smartphone shipments, is reportedly preparing to launch its first in-house 5G chipset in early 2025. According to reliable tipster Yogesh Brar, the chipset is being co-developed with Shanghai-based Unisoc and will be manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm N4P process. It is expected to feature a 5G modem developed by Unisoc and also expected to deliver performance comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a flagship chip that powered many high-end devices in 2021 and 2022.

This isn’t Xiaomi’s first attempt at creating its own chipsets. In 2017, the company launched the Mi 5c smartphone with its own Surge S1 chipset, which was a mid-range processor built on a 28nm process with eight Cortex-A53 cores and a Mali-T860 GPU. The upcoming 5G chipset marks a significant leap forward in Xiaomi’s semiconductor ambitions and could offer the company more control over its hardware ecosystem.

In addition to its chipset development, Xiaomi is also rumored to be in the advanced stages of creating a new foldable smartphone, potentially part of the Mix lineup. This device is expected to feature a unique triple-folding design. According to a source with a credible track record, a prototype of this innovative device could be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February 2025.

Meanwhile, Huawei is also working on a tri-fold smartphone with a Z-shaped folding pattern, set to debut in September. This suggests a growing trend towards more innovative foldable devices in the smartphone industry, with major players like Xiaomi and Huawei pushing the boundaries of design and technology. While the Huawei device might initially be limited to the Chinese market, Xiaomi’s new foldable could potentially reach a broader audience, especially if teased during the holiday season.

Samsung Extends Tizen OS Support for Smart TVs to Seven Years

Samsung has announced a significant extension to its firmware upgrade policy for smart TVs, committing to seven years of Tizen OS updates for its devices. This new policy will cover Samsung’s latest AI-powered smart TVs starting from 2024 and select models from 2023. The extension aligns with Samsung’s earlier decision to support its flagship Galaxy phones with seven major OS updates over a similar period.

image : samsung

This policy change aims to provide customers with longer access to key One UI features and enhanced security measures, surpassing the current industry standard of two to three years of firmware updates for smart TVs. Samsung’s decision to extend its update policy is part of a broader strategy to maintain its leading position in the global TV market amid growing competition from brands like Hisense and TCL.

Yong Seok-woo, president and head of Samsung’s TV division, stated at a recent business briefing that this move is intended to “widen the gap in market share with Chinese companies.” However, it remains uncertain if the seven-year upgrade policy will be applied to older models released before 2023. This comes despite LG’s earlier announcement to update some of its 2022 TV models for the next five years. Samsung has yet to clarify the extent of its software support for its premium-tier models from 2022.

Google Pixel 9a Leaked, Showcasing Design Similarities with Pixel 9 Series

The Google Pixel 9 series launched recently with four devices, including the standard Pixel 9, two Pro models, and a foldable variant. However, a new leak has revealed the upcoming Pixel 9a, which is expected to join the lineup soon. The Pixel 9a appears similar to its predecessors, featuring a flat display with a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera. However, the device is expected to have slightly thicker bezels than the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro models, as trends suggest.

The Pixel 9a maintains an aluminum frame with a matte finish, similar to the Pixel 9. It also includes a SIM slot, USB-C port, and speaker at the bottom. The back of the device is made of glass and features a small camera bar with dual cameras, surrounded by a glossy ring that sits almost flush with the back panel.

The leak suggests that the Pixel 9a will launch towards the end of this year and will be available in four color options, including black and silver. It is also expected to feature the same Google Tensor G4 chipset found in the more expensive Pixel lineup.

This device is ideal for those who want to experience the Pixel series on a budget. The new Pixel 9a aims to provide much of the same experience as its larger sibling, the Pixel 9, while making some minor compromises.

Snapchat Finally Introduces Native iPad Support After 13 Years

After 13 years of being exclusive to the iPhone, Snapchat has finally introduced native support for the iPad. This means there will no longer be huge black bars at the borders. With the latest update, Snapchat now runs full screen on iPadOS, providing a larger canvas for capturing Snaps and viewing more friends on the app’s tabs. However, the current version only supports portrait mode, not landscape mode, as it has not been fully optimized for the iPad yet. Additionally, there are some interface glitches that need to be addressed.

Snapchat

In addition to expanding device support, Snapchat has recently integrated several AI-based features into its app. Users can interact with “My AI” in direct chats to set reminders, create countdowns, or even make Bitmoji avatars using AI. These updates aim to enhance user experience and ensure Snapchat remains engaging and functional across all supported devices.

Snapchat app is available for free on the App Store and requires a device running iOS 13 or later.

AnandTech Shuts Down After Nearly Three Decades of Tech Coverage

AnandTech, a renowned site for computer hardware reviews and analysis, is closing its doors after nearly 30 years in the industry. Ryan Smith, the final editor-in-chief, announced the shutdown in a farewell post, citing the decline in the market for written tech journalism as a major factor. Smith reflected on the site’s legacy and the changing landscape of online media, stating, “Few things last forever, and the market for written tech journalism is not what it once was — nor will it ever be again.”

image :Anand tech logo

Founded in 1997 by Anand Lal Shimpi, AnandTech became a trusted source for hardware enthusiasts, PC builders, and professionals due to its detailed and in-depth reviews of motherboards, processors, and other computer components. Shimpi, who retired from journalism in 2014 to join Apple and work on the M series chipset, had previously expressed concern about the “cable-TV-ification of the internet,” referring to a shift towards sensationalism and clickbait content and away from comprehensive analysis.

While the site will no longer publish new content, Future PLC, AnandTech’s publisher, plans to keep the site’s archive available indefinitely. The active AnandTech Forums will also continue to operate, moderated by Future’s community team, providing a space for ongoing discussions among tech enthusiasts.

North Korean Hackers Exploit Chrome Bug to Steal Cryptocurrency, Microsoft Reports

Microsoft has reported that a North Korean hacking group, Citrine Sleet, exploited an unknown vulnerability in Chrome-based browsers to target organizations and steal cryptocurrency in August. The tech giant’s cybersecurity researchers first detected the hackers’ activities on August 19. Citrine Sleet is known for targeting the cryptocurrency industry, often using sophisticated tactics such as fake websites and social engineering to compromise victims.

The group exploited a zero-day flaw in Chromium, the core engine behind Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and other popular browsers. The vulnerability allowed them to access victims’ systems without the software makers, like Google, being aware of the bug initially. Google patched the flaw two days later, on August 21. While Google confirmed the bug was patched, it declined to provide further comments.

Citrine Sleet uses various methods to compromise its targets, including creating fake cryptocurrency trading platforms and distributing malicious applications. They commonly infect targets with AppleJeus, a unique trojan malware designed to steal cryptocurrency. Additionally, by exploiting another vulnerability in the Windows kernel, they could install a rootkit, giving them deep access to the victim’s operating system and complete control over the computer.

Microsoft has notified the affected customers but did not disclose the number of organizations or individuals targeted. The attack underscores North Korea’s continued focus on stealing cryptocurrency to fund its nuclear weapons program, with the regime reportedly having stolen $3 billion in crypto between 2017 and 2023, according to a United Nations report.
